第１楽章では、マーラーが『死』に対する極度の不安や嫌悪感の中で、新幹線をコンクリートの壁に激突させるかのように、意図的に音楽を混乱に陥らせているように感じます。そして２度、瓦礫(いわゆるシャッテンハフトの通路、影のような非現実的な通路)の中から這い戻り、生の断片を拾い上げ、私たちは出発点に戻っていることに気づかされるのです。結局、死に向かって叫んだところで、死を追いやることはできないのです。
物語の細部を一つひとつ聴き分けることができれば、音楽が語る「人生の旅路」が浮かび上がり、最終的な「受容（acceptance）」の瞬間がいっそう美しく感じられるのです。
思うのです――『指輪物語』の最終章は、それ自体でも十分に美しいけれど、前の1000ページを読んだあとでこそ、さらに深く心に響くのではないでしょうか。
マーラー第9番（M9）の物語の細部をどうすれば聴き手と共有できるのか――それが私の課題なのです。

【Additional comments from Music Director Jonathan Nott】
In the first movement I feel that in his panic or disgust at Death Mahler drives the music deliberately into chaos: like driving a Shinkansen into a concrete wall. And then twice we crawl back out of the rubble (those Schattenhaft passages) and pick up the pieces of life, and realise that we are right back where we started: one can’t scream at Death to make it go away.
That part is interesting because although one doesn’t need to know anything really about the storyline, one has expectations in a Symphony, and it is the battle between what one expects and what one gets that creates the real story. And because the story is so important, and partly full of panic attacks, the battle is deliberately “confusing “.
If it stays confusing then the listener stops listening because they can’t follow the story: the music becomes saturated and thus a “block” of sound.
But if one can separate out the details of the storyline the life journey it tells makes the final “acceptance “ so much more beautiful.
I wonder: the last chapter of the Lord of the Rings is beautiful in its own right, but so much more so after reading the 1000 pages before.
How to share the details of the M9 story is my challenge.
